Project CARE — Children with Abilities for Responsive Education — came to life at St. John Elementary School as a heartfelt celebration of inclusive education and literacy. Designed for students with special needs, the initiative created a space where learning, empathy, and genuine connection flourished between Rotaractors, educators, and the children.
The day began with the distribution of “Bag to School” kits, equipping learners with essential school supplies to support their daily classroom journey. Included in the kits was a specially customized activity book, Copy Color: Etiquette Edition and Animal Edition — thoughtfully created for the students to enjoy while learning. The team extends heartfelt thanks to our talented artist Rtr. Jasmin Castro-Abing for bringing this meaningful resource to life. More than providing materials, the project also deepened understanding.
Class adviser Ma’am Sarah led an insightful session on recognizing and responding to diverse learning needs, generously sharing her experiences and practical approaches. Her talk allowed the Rotaractors to appreciate the patience, compassion, and creativity required in teaching children with different abilities — a learning moment that resonated deeply with everyone present.
One of the most touching highlights was the art activity, where each Rotaractor partnered with a child to create a drawing of their hands — one from the student and one from the volunteer. The simple yet powerful activity symbolized partnership, trust, and the shared journey of learning together.
Support continued through the turn-over of hygiene kits and slippers, ensuring the students’ comfort and well-being both inside and outside the classroom. The team also donated art and craft materials, calm kits, and various cognitive activity resources, enriching the learning environment with tools that encourage creativity, focus, and emotional regulation.
A special highlight of Project CARE was the donation of Froebel Gifts — educational play materials rooted in the philosophy of learning through exploration and play. These thoughtfully designed manipulatives help children develop fine motor skills, spatial awareness, creativity, and early problem-solving abilities. By introducing these materials, the project not only provided tools for play but also meaningful resources that support holistic development and inclusive classroom engagement.
Another significant contribution was the donation of a printer, a practical yet impactful resource that will greatly assist teachers in preparing customized learning materials, visual aids, and activity sheets tailored to the needs of their students. This support strengthens the school’s capacity to deliver responsive and adaptive instruction every day.
In a beautiful exchange of gratitude, the students gifted the volunteers hand-colored bookmarks — simple tokens that carried immense meaning and joy. The heartfelt gesture served as a reminder that the most powerful impact of service is often found in genuine human connection.
School principal Ms. Elena expressed her appreciation, sharing that the visit brought not only resources but renewed encouragement to the teachers and students, reminding them that the community stands with them in championing inclusive education.
Project CARE stands as a testament to what happens when compassion meets action. Kudos to the Basic Education Team, spearheaded by PP Jovelyn, for leading such a thoughtful and transformative initiative. Through efforts like these, inclusion becomes more than an advocacy — it becomes a lived experience, shaping a future where every child’s abilities are recognized, nurtured, and celebrated.
